En soffliggares dagbok

En soffliggares dagbok (The Diary of an Abstainer*) by Tage Danielsson, illustrations by Per Åhlin: A little book about a man's thoughts about the upcoming election to the Swedish parliament in 1968. He discusses with himself his non-existing interest in politics and comes to the conclusion that he is actually not uninterested. He discusses the pros and cons of the different political parties and finally goes off to vote.

The Man Who Quit Smoking

"Mannen som slutade röka" (The Man Who Quit Smoking) from 1968 by Tage Danielsson and illustrated by Per Åhlin is a comedy inspired by the Divine Comedy (beginning of the 14th century) by Dante Alighieri, which is in fact also the name of the main character in this modern version. Like his mid-evil namesake Dante also goes through the three stages Inferno, Purgatorio and finally Paradiso. Dante is "...a young man who loves smoking. When his father dies Dante inherits $17 million on one special condition: He must give up smoking in 14 days and then stay smoke-free for an entire year. If he fails, his uncle inherits the $17 million instead. Dante has a living hell while trying to quit, and hires a private detective agency called Little Secret Service who he gives free hands to stop him from smoking, While his uncle, who has taken up smoking himself, also does everything he can to make Dante smoke again." (quote)

In 1972 came the movie based on the book directed by the writer himself.

Book Covers: Per Åhlin

There are new additions to our Flickr group called, quite simply: Per Åhlin.

"Per Åhlin is a Swedish illustrator and animator born in 1931. He is mostly known for his animations but in fact he was one of the most productive Swedish illustrators of paperback covers in the 60s and 70s.

This is an attempt to collect and document as many of his book illustrations as possible. However the group is called just "Per Åhlin" to mark that it is open for his other illustrations too."

So far the contributing members are P-E Fronning and David at The Klockarp Institute. Maybe you'd like to join as a member too? Contributing or not you are welcome.

Svarta Serien

These are paperback covers belonging to a Swedish publication series of crime books from the 60s called "Svarta serien" - "The Black Series". What they also have in common is that they are all illustrated by one of my absolute favorites - Per Åhlin. I and his other fans are lucky because in the 60s he was very active as a book cover illustrator. Thus it is not hard to come by his works in antiquarian bookshops or thrift stores.

Animation: Karl-Bertil Jonssons julafton

IN SWEDISH! uploaded by maxxtroSwe

Wikipedia (eng): "Sagan om Karl-Bertil Jonssons Julafton ("The Tale About Karl-Bertil Jonsson's Christmas Eve") is Per Åhlin's animated movie adaptation of Tage Danielsson's short story of the same name, telling a heart-warming tale of a modern Robin Hood who takes from the rich to give to the poor people of Stockholm on Christmas Eve. Karl-Bertil Jonsson's Julafton has gained huge popularity in Sweden, and is broadcast every Christmas Eve on Swedish and Norwegian national television.

The film was dubbed to English in 1987, with Bernard Cribbins as the voice-over, and got the title "Christopher's Christmas Mission"."
