Audio Ephemera: European Holiday

S
ometime in the 50s SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System) made this promotional record aimed at the US market.

The B side is not very interesting it only consists of three pieces of classical Scandinavian music ("Suite ancienne" /Johan Halvorsen, "Pastoral suite" /Lars-Erik Larsson, "Champagne galop" /H.C. Lumbye). Not bad but you will find better recordings.

The A side, however, is made as a sort of musical...

"Pictures, colorful as they may be, tell only a part of the wonders of Europe. Even pictures with exciting words can't tell all the story. It takes 3D to bring a European Holiday to full, glorious life... pictures, words - AND MUSIC! And that's why this records was born.
"European Holiday" is a star feature of the giant-size S A S Travel PLanning Kit.
Here is the most exciting way ever devised for planning your trip. You see pictures of the wonderful sights in Europe... read about them....and the HEAR about hem too in this gay, romantic, Mitch Miller production. So start the music - and start dreaming!"

Music: Merit & the Meritones

M
erit Hemmingson & the Meritones "at the Esquire Club" (or perhaps Discoteque dance a go go if this is not the name of a series of records. Does anyone know for sure?) was recorded live on the 1st of February 1966 and released in 1967. This was the first record Merit ever did and not the most interesting and personal but I definitely think it's worth listening to. I don't believe it has ever been reprinted so until it's released on CD (if ever) here we go:

Illustration by Owe Gustafsson for a Swedish childrens TV show called Fem myror är fler än fyra elefanter/Five ants are more than four elephants. In spirit somewhat like Sesame Street. (Framed prints can be bought here.) By the way, check out his Hommage a Tintin.

Musselsoppans Vänner has been updated with some new images. The theme seems to be elephants for some reason...

Music: Sivuca

Here's a great record with Brazilian guitar and accordion player Sivuca recorded in Stockholm Sweden in 1969. Flute and string arrangements by Merit Hemmingson.

I hope you enjoy it.

Travel Posters

"The 1920’s and 1930’s ushered in an unprecedented era of travel to exotic and romantic destinations. And nowhere was this more clearly expressed than in the travel posters of that time. The Los Angeles Public Library ’s collection of travel posters perfectly captures this era. With this exhibition, the Library shares its bounty with the public for the first time."

Short film: Staplerfahrer Claus

A
German safety advert parody containing extreme gore. It's funny but not for the squeamish. Just give it a couple of minutes to get the action going.

UPDATE
Dear Swen of Swen's Weblog tells us that the movie is called "Staplerfahrer Claus" and that it's available on DVD for 5 EUR. Thanks Swen!
