Pippi by Miyazaki

In 1971 Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli wanted to make an animated movie based on the children's books about Pippi Longstocking, but he was unable to obtain the rights from the author Astrid Lindgren. However there are some concept sketches and storyboards to see and also some more reading to do on the subject.

Videos: Pippi Långstrump

The original Swedish Pippi Longstocking theme song on YouTube and here is one in English if that's your cup of tea. And in French(!) with charming illustrations! Three more original Pippi songs. Pippi, Tommy, Annika and Astrid Lindgren on Hylands Hörna in 1970. Pippi in a sword fight with Lennart Hyland (He was Sweden's Johnny Carson - kind of.) A longer clip from an episode where Pippi's father - Beppe Wolgers - appears (in Swedish of course).

Illustration: Människornas Land

Inuit is said to have many meanings - one of them being The Land of Man (Människornas Land). I happened to stumble upon this charming children's book illustrated by the wonderful Dane Ingrid Vang Nyman (1916-1959). She will always be known as the first illustrator of the Pippi Longstocking stories, but here is something else. It's a story about the Inuit children Nuka and Naja who gets lost and has to make ways to survive in nature. One of the ways is collecting eggs as you'll see below. A few more pictures to see here.
