Movies: Freaks

Tod Browning's classic cult movie Freaks from 1932 has been made available at Google Video! Who has done such a good deed? Go and ask Bibi and also find the Google Video link there! (Don't miss Häxan either. But the conscious reader knows I have already mentioned this)

"...from the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York. The marquee on the movie theater is showing Divorce in the Family with Jackie Cooper which would date the photos to around 1932." From Swapatorium.

There's a big chance you've seen this before. At least parts of it. Have a look at this large and very funny collection of unintentionally (or is it? One wonders!) sexual stuff in comics. You'll know pretty quick if it's your cup of tea. Seduction Of The Innocent

Design: Vintage Japanese Matchbox Labels

No, this is not my own collection. Well, that is I have collected them, from the internet. I found them in October last year and I published them here and in Musselsoppans Vänner at the time. I just think they are extraordinarily beautiful and I was sad to see that the original link to them were dead. There were many more there but I'm glad I saved this many. Enjoy.

Design: Cigarette Packs

These two sites must represent the two most extensive cigarette pack collections on the internet (am I wrong?) : DesignBoom (via Coudal Partners) and La Saga Cigarette (a repost originally via NIBLOG). They are both very impressive.

After getting some inspiration go here and generate your own cigarette pack.

Well, who cares! Here's another one: Letters

Retro: Hungarian Calendar Cards

A bunch of,
in many cases, hilarious Hungarian vintage calendar cards (or whatever you'd prefer to call 'em) will be found on this Hungarian site. On the picture side there are pin-ups, other collectible images, advertisement for sausages and lotto, (I think) public awareness info and more. And they are all worth a look. Just check out the Borat look-alike on the last one!

Do you know Dean Reed by the way?

Music: Big Mama Thornton - Hound Dog

"Her big hit came, not from Robey's capable pen, but from the young songwriting team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. It was "Hound Dog", which she recorded in 1953 with the Johnny Otis band. Big Mama Thornton always claimed to have written the song herself (a claim which may actually hold some validity), and her ferocious rendition of it (complete with Big Mama's growl and a nasty guitar line by Pete Lewis) held the #1 spot in the Billboard rhythm and blues charts for nine weeks. Unfortunately for Thornton, Elvis Presley's smoother and bowdlerized version was a major pop hit in 1956 and successfully eclipsed her biggest claim to fame."

Music: AFREAKA !

"Messed -up funky jazz from an obscure early 70s UK group and an album that really lives up to its trippy cover! The tracks are all long and stretched out with lots of organ, sax, and spaced out drums and the overall style is a mix of dub-heavy funk, Afro jazz, and a bit of jazz rock jamming!"
