Music: Who Is Harry Nilsson?

Well, as it is said in the trailer for documentary "Who Is Harry Nilsson? And Why Is Everybody Talkin' About Him?" - either people get it (who he is) right away or they have no idea.
It seems that everyone who do know who Harry Nilsson was will agree that: 1...he was an extremely talented singer and songwriter 2...he was an extremely complicated person "a big bunny with really sharp teeth".
While being a very productive and successful songwriter, both for himself and others, like the song "One" recorded by Three Dog Night, the two largest hits for Nilsson as a performing artist were not written by him. Those songs are the theme from the movie Midnight Cowboy "Everybody's Talkin'" and "Without You".
Nilsson lived a life that took a toll on his body - partying, drinking etc with friends like John Lennon, Ringo Starr and Keith Moon - and Nilsson sadly died in 1993 before the age of 53.

Here follows a collection of the YouTube movies that had a Nilsson connection and that I found worth putting together. There's the documentary trailer, a couple of versions of "Everybody's talkin'", "Without You", "One" with Three Dog Night, "Daddy's Song" - a song he did for The Monkeys, A documentary about some of Nilsson's recording session in five parts and some more... Enjoy!

I didn't mind this, Dear YouTube,
but I did mind that you suddenly closed the account down a few days after this message. What's the logic behind handing out a warning notice one day and closing down the next? I mean, why the warning? Not cool!

Movies: Secret Of The Incas

'Secret Of The Incas', 1954, poster

"An Inca legend says the Inca Empire was destroyed by the gods when a gold and jeweled starburst was stolen from the Temple of the Sun centuries ago, and the ancient civilization will spring anew when the treasure is returned. The natives want it but so does Harry Steele (Charlton Heston), an American adventurer of slightly-shady ways who wants it for personal gain, as does his adversary (Thomas Mitchell), a grizzled old man even more into skullduggery than Steele. The latter teams up with Elena Antonescu (Nicole Maurey), an Iron Curtain refugee fleeing from the MKVD. She can help him get a plane and he can help her escape Peru for the relative safety of Mexico. Is there a chance they will end up in a bickering love-hate relationship?...Is there a chance an American archaelogist, Dr. Stanley Moorehead (Robert Young), will come along as one corner of a romantic triangle?...Is there a chance that Yma Sumac (billed third on the posters and ads and special billed in the film), who can't act but can sing, will sing a few songs?...Is there a chance that these trite-sounding questions will develop into a film that is far from trite and vastly entertaining? Dang right, there is. Check it out" (Quoted from IMDb entry)

Clip 1. - (Harry Steele (Charlton Heston) and Elena (Nicole Maurey) walk up from the Urabamba river and refer to Machu Picchu being a place nobody comes up to)
Clip 2. - (In this scene which reminds me very much of the "Map Room" scene in Raiders of the Lost ark, where light diversion is used to locate secret locations. I've brightened up a few scenes so you can see what is happening.)
Clip 3. - (In this closing scene with Yma Sumac singing, it appears like the local Quechua people of Peru were used as extras and some of the scene was filmed in Machu Picchu itself.)

Clips and comments above were supplied by YouTube user Ossadawn.

Here is a spectacular scene with Miss Sumac performing "Taita Inti". Watch out for the high notes!

Lee Hazlewood: The jingling of silver spurrs has subsided

The American country/pop singer, songwriter, and record producer Lee Hazlewood died on the 4th of August. He passed away in his home in Las Vegas after a long battle with renal (kidney) cancer.
He had expressed his wish to be cremated and have his ashes "strewn on a Swedish island where he composed some of his favorite songs." According to Swedish newspaper SvD this would be the island of Gotland. If his wish is fulfilled he will, by the way, be resting close to Ingmar Bergman...

Ingmar Bergman: Persona - the Prolog

uploaded to YouTube by ropbo

Of the much fêted opening scenes in the film, Bergman has said that he wanted to make a poem in images: "I reflected on what was important, and began with the projector and my desire to set it in motion. But when the projector was running, nothing came out of it but old ideas, the spider, God's lamb, all that dull stuff. My life then consisted of dead people, brick walls, and a few dismal trees out in the park."

Music Video: Brook Benton - Mother Nature, Father Time

Yes! It's finally here.
I've asked Bedazzled for it before and now at last everybody can enjoy this fantastic video. Just to make sure you'll watch it I've posted some teaser screenshots for you. But of course it doesn't even give you half an idea.
Mother Nature, Father Time was both the name of a single and an album from Brook Benton in 1965. Neither of them did very well on the charts but that's neither here nor there today. No, for today you'll see the video which is ranked #1 on my weirdo chart. Enjoy!

Watch it at YouTube or go to Bedazzled for other options.

Note: For Swedish readers I'd just like to say that I saw this at least once on the TV show Nattsudd with Svante Grundberg and Björn Wallde some time between -85 and -88 and was instantly smitten. And the sounds and images has stuck in my memory since. And now you know. Soon they will have stuck to yours.

Animation: Winnie the Pooh in the Soviet Union

A year ago I uploaded a few snippets of the Soviet made Winnie the Pooh which I thought were truly delightful. And now I'm happy to say that YouTube signature kuba0000 has done the good deed of uploading full episodes in 4 parts. They were made in 1969-1972 by the acclaimed film company Soyuzmultfilm, known for a number of celebrated animations like the series about Cheburashka and short films like Hedgehog In The Fog and The Heron and the Crane (Watch them at Videos With Bibi!).

For your convenience I have collected the Soviet-made Winnie-the-Pooh-episodes into one playlist. (see below). I found them through this article in the blog Think In Pictures where the image of Pooh is discussed. For me Pooh has many faces; I love the originals from the book made by Englishman E H Shepherd, however one can't deny that the Disney version exists in one's conscience but now they have both been joined by the fresh images of the Soviet Pooh. I hope you too will enjoy him, although there are no subtitles. You probably know the stories well-enough to follow. Follow?

PS. You'd better hurry watching it. You never know for how long it'll be available!
